Conceived as the modern heir to the M15, the FiiO M15S takes up the idea of the “living room player” while adding a good dose of maturity.
Using a desktop-grade ES9038PRO clearly changes the game: the sound reproduction gains clarity, density, and precision, while retaining a certain smoothness in the upper frequencies. The bass extends deep with excellent control, the midrange is rich and articulate, and the treble reaches high without being harsh. The soundstage, wide and well-structured, gives each recording a true sense of spaciousness.
One of its major strengths remains Desktop Mode: when connected to a USB-PD or QC power supply, the M15S switches to "stationary" power, freeing up additional gain and delivering up to 1.2 W per channel at 4.4 mm. In practical terms, it's very close to being a compact desktop headphone amplifier, capable of driving planar magnetic headphones or large dynamic drivers without straining.
In terms of usability, the Snapdragon 660 + Android 10 combination makes all the difference: a smooth system, full compatibility with modern streaming apps – including Apple Music – and the option to switch to Pure Music mode for an experience focused on local listening. All this in a well-finished chassis, a bit bulky but still portable, dominated by a backlit volume wheel that has become a FiiO signature.
A hybrid device, halfway between a high-end portable player and a compact home source, which has a great place in a second life for those who want a powerful, modern and very musical all-in-one.
Technical details & operation
At the heart of the FiiO M15S lies an ESS ES9038PRO DAC utilizing its eight internal channels in a high-performance configuration. The signal is then passed through a meticulously designed analog section, based in particular on OPA926 transistors and a clock driven by an FPGA and dual NDK femtocell oscillator, in order to minimize jitter and distortion.
The M15S offers five gain levels, two of which are dedicated to headphones:
- "Low / medium / high" gain settings for in-ear and portable headphones,
- an “over-ear” mode
- and an “enhanced over-ear” mode accessible with external power, which makes the most of the machine’s power reserve to reach the famous 1.2 W per channel in 4.4 mm.
The digital section is based on a Snapdragon 660, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (of which ~46GB is available), expandable via microSD up to 2TB.
The 5.5" IPS screen (1440 × 720) offers a browsing experience close to that of a compact smartphone.
For connectivity, the M15S offers:
- 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, with AirPlay support, DLNA, Roon Ready,
- Bidirectional Bluetooth 5.0, with SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX LL, aptX Adaptive, LDAC and LHDC depending on the transmission direction
- a USB-C 3.0 port for fast charging, transfer and USB DAC mode.
The approximately 6200 mAh battery allows for around ten hours of playback depending on the mode and gain, compensated by QC/PD support which ensures fast charging.
